Food Again
I do love 'Pasar Malam' and I think it is convenient in terms of getting fresh produce and also quick tidbits...our area has one every Wednesdays. It's quite close to the house and we do our weekly grocery shopping there...no parking hassle, no jams, and in fact, we just go straight to the stalls that sell the things that we wanted...the vegetables are fresh, plus you can bargain if you want to (most of the time we don't)
Since it's the Ramadhan month, most of the stall owners move to a different place... well! we have not made a stop to one yet and if possible I would rather cook than spending my money there. Too many complaints I've heard, yet people still prefer going to these bazaars and spend quite a lot there. Maybe 'rambang mata' or maybe they do have a lot of money to spend...ya lah! nak beli untuk breakfast, lunch, tea time, dinner punya food in one shot....and people tend to forget the purpose of fasting. By the time you get home, the food is either spoiled or tasteless...such a waste! Not to mention the price you have to pay for each item.
This morning I heard someone complaint about the price of Nasi Ayam at his place...RM5 each! If you're paying for family of 4...that would be RM20...what about dessert? or appetizer? RM40-RM50 a day that would add to over RM500-RM600 just for that month alone...
Talk about fasting month, I kinda miss my kampung when my father was still around. My aunties would send something every single day, it could be main entree or sometimes dessert. Rezeki di sana memang murah, ada saja orang yang akan menghantar juadah...that was really nice.
Lately, people are 'into' all kinds of buffet. When I used to live in LV, buffets were normal to locals and even tourists...it's something the hotels would just give away to their guests and in fact, buffet was the best and convenient way to entertaint your guests since it is very inexpensive and your guests can choose whatever food they want to eat. (My favourite there were Rio & most of the Station Hotel-Casinos) The most you would pay will be around USD15.00 (do not convert since you're earning dollar there). In LV, there are so many ways to get free buffets. Every hotel-casinos have their own promotions...just check the local newspaper or magazines and clip their coupons and if you're locals the trick is to line up around 10.30-11.00 am and pay for breakfast buffet (which is the cheapest...cost about USD5.00) that time dia orang akan tukar makanan untuk serve for lunch. Plus unlimited drinks are included, you can have tea. coffee. sodas, juice that would be served at your table.....Food memang abundance di sana. All hotel-casinos provide free meals for their employees...itu yang jadikan badan kita bagai dipam2...imagine our office dulu memang sebelah banquet halls, nak masuk office kena lalu main kitchen...so memang kenal ramai chefs and pekerja2 from food & beverage...Every morning they would send a tray full doughnuts, bagels to our office, pastu kerja banyak duduk...makin menjadilah!
So back to buffet, I know kalau orang mampu they can spend their money kat buffets di hotel2...tapi to me tak berbaloi...RM40-RM50 per person..itu paling murah...ada sampai RM85 gak (just because kat 5 star hotel) makanan tak seberapa and paling sakit hati melihat orang yang terlalu tamak mengisi segala apa yang boleh dalam satu pinggan...if you've seen one, you know what I mean...ada gak yang berani bawak beg plastic kosong nak bawak balik untuk orang2 kat rumah...ini yang dinamakan jakun....my brother selalu bising tengok officemates dia buat perangai gitu bila ada kursus kat hotel2, macam tak serik2.
Bangi dah banyak gak restaurant yang buat buffet buka puasa. Setakat ni tak teragak lagi nak pergi. Masak kat rumah lagi sedap...cuma there's one place I wouldn't mind going...it's called Red Wok...they serve all you can eat seafood steamboat buffet. The price is about RM25-RM28 per person...ni kira puas sikit la (Ada website dia orang)...nantilah ajak Acu & family pergi.
Apa2 pun kita kena belajar berjimat sikit. Jangan dilayan sangat mata bila nampak makanan yang mungkinnya sedap mungkin tidak. Set a budget kalau nak berbelanja...and I usually stick to the stalls or people that I know sebab kebiasaannya orang yang hanya berjual masa musim2 begini cuma nak kaya cepat. Then again, if you feel it's your money and want to spend which ever way you want...jangan complain di kemudian hari
